This one day in-person workshop will focus on giving therapists skills to coach parents of their child clients. Or if a parent or parents are their clients, therapist will learn strategies to teach them skills to help with parent/child interactions and attachment.
Evidence-based best practices recognize that stress arises not only from our mind but from our physiology and bodies. When children act out or do poorly, parents may experience stress and overwhelm, over activation in their sympathetic branch of the nervous system and release of stress hormones. Conversely they also may shut down and experience freeze physiology, immobility, over activation in the parasympathetic nervous system, withdrawal and depression.
Parents need help too! In this workshop you will learn how to teach parents:
- 6 regulation tools to work with stress and shut down
- A model of stress and the autonomic nervous system that will help them understand their responses from a biological perspective
- Practice a boundary and communication exercise that creates clear communication and promotes secure attachment
Therapists will learn from a combination of lecture and practicing coaching skills. They have ready to use skills for parents when they go back to their offices and agencies.
